Area:

Throughout The Isles

Between the 17th and 20th centuries, several key industries emerged that today form an important component of the North Isles historical record.

This project will research some of the key industries that developed and examine the remnants and relics from these endeavours, that survive in the landscape today. These include the pits and drying platforms from the kelp industry, tracks and cuttings from industrial peat exportation, the built heritage from the herring boom and the wealth of evidence left from farming over the ages.

Archaeologists will lead the research and provide training and volunteering opportunities. The research will be shared through presentations and published material.

More information about this project will be added as it develops.
